Description
Kaimu Black Sand Beach, Island of Hawaii, once one of the most beautiful of Hawaiian beaches, as seen in March 1976. An earthquake in 1974 lowered the beach by a few feet, dooming some of the coconut palm trees seen here. Note how waves reached almost to the palm trees. The final demise occurred in 1990, when over 50', 15m, of fresh lava from Kilauea Volcano burried the beach. Image taken in 4x5 film format.
