Description
Rest stop for Mt. Rainier Guide Service guided party, WA, August 12, 1953. The route climbed was the Gibraltar Ledges, Note the difference between this guided party and modern guided parties. Despite the fact that this route is subject to rockfall, not a single member of this guided party wore protective helmets. Guide Paul Gerstmann is at right; assistant guide Larry Wild is on the left. Other members included Leon Blumer (in large hat), my sister Beverly Cooper, and Bill Dolan. The ropes seen here were made of manilla, which were replaced by stronger materials in a few years. I took picture with an Ansco Panda box camera. This is a restoration of a badly faded image.
