Description
Sunrise on Willis Wall East on Mt. Rainier, WA, the most dangerous piece of real estate for climbers in the lower 48 states. Ice avalanches from the summit icecap are constantly eating away at this side of the mountain. The "safest" route up this side of the mountain is Liberty Ridge, on the right. Two guides and 4 clients were swept away by an avalanche here in June 2014 and were never found. Mike Swayne and I made an ascent on this face via the East Rib and Boulderfield Cliff sunlit at left above the glacier, in June 1962. This image is cropped from a 4x5 transparency taken in August 1977.
